ACLENet's Mission is to reduce deaths, injuries, and property damage from lightning across Africa.
ACLENet's VISION is that everyone in the world will be safe from lightning.
Lightning causes deaths and injuries across Africa, devastating families and communities.
Lightning kills livestock, still a measure of family wealth in many African countries.
Lightning causes direct damage to utility infrastructure, industry, communications systems, and mining in remote areas of countries that are already economically challenged. This damage can take weeks to repair if parts are unavailable or unaffordable.
Damage also causes harder-to-calculate indirect downtime costs for businesses and those who suffer loss of work, must live without power, communications, internet, refrigeration, and other things as a result of the direct damage - things many of us take for granted.
ACLENet's OBJECTIVES reach across Africa
The African Centres for Lightning and Electromagnetics Network is a not-for-profit organization with national centres in Africa registered as a non-governmental organizations (NGO) or companies limited by guarantee. ACLENet operates within the cultural paradigms in each African nation to achieve these goals:
1) To assess the impact of lightning on each nation’s citizens and economy.
2) To work with governments to assure that lightning protection system designs, materials and installations are compliant with accepted international standards and required for all schools and other important buildings.
3) To educate teachers, parents, pupils and the general public about lightning safety.
4) To improve the availability of accurate and timely lightning data, weather forecasting, and warnings.
5) To improve training and professional qualifications of engineers, architects and electrical installers in lightning protection design and installation standards.
6) To advise on code-compliant lightning protection of utilities and other economically important industries.
7) To work with universities to train Africa’s own lightning experts for the future.
