PERSONAL PROFILE:

Hello! Alhaji Babagana Abubakar is a Member Board of Directors here at ACLENet.

Mr. Abubakar, is an expert working on the issue of mainstreaming scientific and technological applications in solving environmental issues. For over a decade he has been working on issues relevant to promoting the understanding of space sciences in the developing countries with particular focus to space science applications in mitigating disasters and space science and technical applications for development.

He is currently a member on advisory capacity to the United Nations Informal Advisory Group on Technical and Scientific Cooperation, as a result, he is playing vital roles in the areas of promoting and facilitating technical and scientific cooperation as well as technology transfer across the globe.

EDUCATIONAL & PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Mr. Abubakar obtained his B.Sc. and a masters degree from the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria and has also obtained other certificates from other Worlds esteemed institutions including the United Nations Institute for Training and Research based in Geneva, Switzerland and the University of Valencia in Spain among others.

PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS:

He has over thirty relevant publications, articles and presentations on space sciences including those related to lightning protection and raising awareness on preventing lightning in transportation facilities at the national, regional and international levels , in addition to series of presentations at the annual United Nations/ International Astronautical Federation (IAF) events on Integrated Space Technologies and Space-based Information for Analysis, Communicating Astronomy with the Public (CAP) events and other United Nations space based events for international developments.

OTHER RELATED PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES & MEMBERSHIP:

Mr. Abubakar, was one of the strong members behind the formation of the African Astronomical Society (AfAS) which is a Pan-African Professional Society of Astronomers at the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Symposium held in Ouagadougou, as he was part of the Interim Working Group that was formed to conduct the formation of the AfAS. In addition, he was also one of the signatories of the initial Constitution of the AfAS that was agreed to and signed by the members of the Interim Working Group in Burkina Faso, on the 16 December 2010. This interim Working Group consisted of members from Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and the U.S.A. It was this collective effort of Mr. Abubakar and his colleagues, that lead to the official launched of the AfAS at the 2nd Middle East and Africa Regional IAU Meeting held in Cape Town, South Africa, in April 2011.

Mr. Abubakar, is a fellow of the African Scientific Institute, a member of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) as well as a Chattered Member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).
